“Covidiot”

世界中がCOVID-19の脅威に晒されて１年半以上が経過しました、ワクチンの接種が進んでいる国では、”We can see the light at the end of the tunnel at last”との空気も漂い始めているようですが、まだまだとても先は見通せません。そんな中、この１年以上の間に、様々なコロナ関連の新語が生まれています。今回は、そんなコトバを集めてみました。

そもそもは”covidiot”という単語に出くわしたことが発端でした。何となく「コロナバカ」というイメージは浮かびましたが、実際どのようなバカを指すのか調べてみようということで、この手のスラングや造語の宝庫であるurban dictionary < https://www.urbandictionary.com/ > で検索してみることにしました。因みにご存じの方も数多くいらっしゃるとは思いますが、このurban dictionaryというサイトは、もともと1999年にアメリカの大学生が、既存の辞書サイトのパロディとして開設したもので、ユーザーの投稿と投票によって、膨大なスラングや慣用句などの定義が公開されています。同じひとつの言葉に複数のいろいろな定義が公開されていますが、そうとうにひねった定義や、ジョークに富んだものなど満載で、通常の辞書と同様に定義を調べてそのまま仕事で使うというわけにはゆきませんが、スラングを感覚的に味わうのに役立ちます。

さてcovidiotを検索してみますと、多数の定義が表示されます。その中の一つを引用します。例文付きです。

1. A stupid person who stubbornly ignores 'social distancing' protocol, thus helping to further spread COVID-19.
2. A stupid person who hoards groceries, needlessly spreading COVID-19 fears and depriving others of vital supplies.
“Are you seriously going to visit grandma? Dude, don’t be such a covidiot.”
“See that guy with the 200 toilet paper rolls? What a covidiot.”

これをきっかけに、他にもどのようなコロナ関連の新語があるか調べてみました。こうしたコトバとの出会いもまた貴重です。

まずはcovidiotと同類のスラングの”Maskhole”。

That segment of the population that ignores Science & decides wearing a mask is not for them. Meanwhile, potentially infecting those around them.
Did you see all the Maskholes at Home Depot today? Not one of them was wearing a mask!

この反対に、政府の提唱する感染対策を教科書通りに実践するのが“covidient”。

Covidient (combination of the words covid, obedient and patient) is a word to describe sensitive people who follow the orders about corona virus strictly thus care for others by staying at home. It can be used as an antonym for the word covidiot.
Let’s be covidients and stay at home for better, corona-free days.

英語のコロナ関連の造語やスラングで多いのは、”lockdown”に関連した言葉です。日本と比較して欧米のロックダウンが格段に厳しかったことが垣間見えます。

“Blursday”は、毎日家に閉じこもっていて今日が何曜日かわからなくなっているの意。そもそもは二日酔いで曜日がわからんという意味で2007年あたりからある言葉のようです。

When you’ve been sheltering in place for so long because of a global pandemic you have no idea what day it is as they all blur together. Blursday!

日頃家にいないお父さんが一日中在宅していることで家庭不和から離婚などということもあるようで……。「コロナ離婚」なる言葉を見かけましたが、これが語源の “covidivorce”。ロックダウン期間中に授かった子供たちは “coronials” 。 (Coronial is a term seeing rising popularity as a label for children conceived or born during the COVID-19 pandemic, reminiscent of the label Millennial describing those raised around the turn of the millennium [by Merriam-Webster])。
自粛中に自宅で楽しむお酒は “Quarantini”。憂さを晴らすためにオンラインショッピングをしまくるのが “spendemic”。自宅でテレビやDVDを見まくるのは “Quaran-stream”。

多くは、covidやpandemic、quarantineをもじった造語ですが、ロックダウンから派生したものもあります。Brexitならぬ “Loxit” や “Covexit”はロックダウンから脱した後の世界のこと。

Perhaps, now is the time to start talking about “Covexit” as the title of an international set of principles and measures to be promoted to deal with the release in a structured way from Covid-19 lockdown.

いずれはロックダウンを懐かしむような時が来てくれることを願って次の言葉で締めくくりましょう。
“Lockstargia”
(we may look back fondly upon the time of lockdown and save up stories to tell our grandchildren – )

仕事現場ですぐに役立つような言葉を勉強することは通訳者の欠かせない日課ですが、それとは別に、このようなその時々の時流の言葉に出会い、味わい、楽しむこともまた、言語感覚や外国語のニュアンスを磨くための貴重な機会だと思っています。
